Breast Augmentation – Breast Implants

Women seek out breast augmentation surgery for many different reasons. Apart from general dissatisfaction with their breast size, some women have asymmetrical breasts that they want to bring into balance, while others have lost volume and firmness in their breasts after pregnancy, age or major weight loss.

Generally speaking, the ideal breast augmentation candidate should meet the following basic qualifications:

  • In good overall health with no major medical problems
  • 18+ years old (for saline breast implants); 22+ years old (for silicone breast implants)
  • Informed about the procedure, including risks and benefits
  • Has realistic expectations and clear cosmetic goals

What Is the Best Age for Breast Augmentation?
The best age for breast enlargement varies depending upon the individual. But patients should be over 18 years of age so that full development of the breast has occurred, in addition to being psychologically ready for a breast augmentation procedure.

A good age for many patients to get breast implants is the early 20s when most have not yet undergone childbirth with its attendant changes to the breasts. Your 20s can be a particularly difficult time for maintaining self-esteem and having larger breasts can restore the confidence needed to maximize one’s sense of sexuality and sexual attractiveness.

Some patients are ready for breast augmentation only after childbirth when their breasts have lost volume and are often sagging. While breast implants, and sometimes lifting, will restore the desired appearance of the breasts, future pregnancies may further affect the breasts in size or drooping.

Choosing a Surgeon to Perform Your Breast Augmentation
When choosing a surgeon to perform your breast enlargement procedure, you need to use several criteria.

You must make certain that your plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This is the only board that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties and is essentially a seal of approval attesting that the surgeon has undergone a rigorous plastic surgery program and has passed a comprehensive and difficult two-part examination.

Second, you want to make sure that your surgeon has extensive experience with breast augmentation. Some plastic surgeons specialize in hand or reconstructive surgery. You want to be certain that your surgeon performs many breast augmentations on an ongoing basis.

Third, you want to see photos to get an idea of the surgeon’s work. Check to see that the breast implants look natural and seem to be proportionate. Look at the shape and contour of the breasts and see if you would be happy with them. But be aware that results vary from patient to patient, as do things like scarring and time to heal.

Finally, it is important that you feel comfortable with your surgeon and have a good rapport. This will alleviate much of your anxiety and increase your confidence.

    Breast Augmentation Revision Surgery
Breast augmentation surgery can also be used to correct problems with your breast implants. Whether you’ve had an implant rupture or are unsatisfied with the results of another surgeon, Dr. Lefkovits can perform a breast implant revision procedure to correct these issues with your implants.

Revision surgery is often more difficult than an initial breast augmentation procedure. Dr. Lefkovits treats each patient as an individual and considers your specific aesthetic goals and needs when recommending and performing procedures.

    Recovery From Breast Enlargement Surgery
Following breast augmentation, you will be placed in a special surgical bra provided by our office. Upon returning home, it is important to stay out of bed as much as possible and keep yourself moving.

Do not do anything strenuous, but walking around is great for recovery. It is also very important to take deep breaths to expand your lungs after surgery. The stitches are usually dissolvable, so you will not have to return for suture removal. Many patients may return to non-strenuous work after a long weekend, and most will return to work within one week.

Breast Implants Surgery Risks and Complications
Every surgery comes with some degree of risk. Breast augmentation surgery is no different. However, when it is performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Lefkovits, the risk of complications associated with breast augmentation is extremely low.

Dr. Lefkovits uses meticulous surgical methods and adheres to high standards of safety and sterility throughout the breast augmentation process to help minimize risks whenever possible. There are also ways you can reduce your own risk level as a patient.

    General Breast Implants Surgical Risks
Some of the basic risks associated with breast augmentation surgery are:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infection
  • Excessive scarring
  • Implant rejection
  • Hematoma (blood vessel breakage)
  • Seroma (fluid collection beneath the skin)
  • Blood clots

Each of these risks can be avoided by closely following our post-surgical instructions. For example, your risk of blood clots can be mitigated by getting out of bed almost immediately after surgery and taking gentle walks.

Risks of Anesthesia During Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is performed under anesthesia. The type of anesthesia Dr. Lefkovits uses will depend on the extent of your procedure and a number of other factors. There are two basic approaches:

  • General anesthesia – You are fully asleep throughout your breast augmentation procedure.
  • Conscious sedation and local anesthesia – Your level of consciousness is altered, but you are not fully asleep. You may have vague memories of your procedure, but time will seem to move quickly, and you will be comfortable.

How to Reduce Your Breast Augmentation Risk Level
The best way to avoid breast augmentation risks and complications is to choose the right plastic surgeon. An experienced, skilled and trustworthy plastic surgeon will take steps at every stage of the breast augmentation process to reduce your risk level, keep you safe and help you achieve the results you are looking for.
